Our specialty is the practice of General Surgery which includes, but is not limited to:
All of our surgeons are trained in, and are proficient in, the techniques used for breast conservation (lumpectomy) in the treatment of breast cancer. All surgeons are active participants in the Memorial Breast Cancer Clinic and the weekly Memorial Breast Cancer Conference - Dedicated to providing state of the art treatment for breast cancer patients.
We seek to provide an opportunity for breast conservation procedures whenever it is desired and is safely possible. When breast conservation is not possible, we work closely with experienced plastic surgeons to achieve reconstruction if desired by the patient.
Sentinel Node Biopsy for the staging of breast
cancer has been performed routinely
by our doctors since 1998. Lymphatic
mapping with Sentinel Node Biopsy provides more accurate nodal staging
compared to routine histology for women with breast cancer without the
morbidity of a complete axillary lymph node dissection.
The majority of patients(80%) have no sign of metastatic disease in
their nodes and could NOT benefit from a complete nodal dissection . The Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy
can usually be performed on an outpatient basis and often without a
general anesthetic.
Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy has also been used as an integral part of our staging and treatment of MELANOMA since 1998. As in the treatment of Breast Cancer, Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy for melanoma provides more accurate, rapid assessment of lymph nodes with minimal chance of post operative lymphedema( swelling), and a much more rapid post-surgical recovery.
