Therapeutic massage sessions are very beneficial for the body. The manipulation of chronically tightened muscles can produce many positive physiological changes. Most Individuals will fell some degree of relief from their pre-existing pain immediately after their session and into the days to follow. For those individuals that have been in chronic pain for an extended period of time, this can be a wonderful feeling.
One of the physiological effects on the body is the release of “toxins” or impurities that have accumulated in stagnant muscle tissue. After your treatment you should increase your water intake to at least 8 glasses per day. Drinking water helps to flush the toxins from your system and helps to hydrate the muscles. If possible, avoid drinking alcohol, coffee, tea or eating anything with caffeine for the remainder of the day. Caffeine has a diuretic effect on the body and increases your body's need for more water.
You should also perform any stretches that have been recommended to you. These will help assist in the continued relaxation and flexibility of the muscles involved. It is best to avoid any type of “taxing” physical work following a treatment. This would include lifting, bending, stooping and extended periods of sitting, standing or walking.
Some people may experience some degree of tightness, heat and/or soreness in the areas that have been worked on immediately after the session or into the next day. This is completely normal. If you should experience any of these post-treatment symptoms the best course of action is to:
1. Gently stretch the area
2. Apply moist heat (if the area is not inflamed, swollen or red)
apply moist heating pad to area for 15 minutes, waiting at least another 15 minutes before reapplying
3. Apply ice (in a towel or protective holder)
apply to the area for 10 minutes, waiting at least 30 minutes before reapplying
4. Take a hot shower or bath
This is a time for your body to heal. Be sure to give it the time, permission and physical assistance necessary to become balanced once again.
